The emotional impact of losing a tooth or teeth is not to be underestimated. It can be overwhelming and affect your confidence. Dental implants provide a permanent, fixed replacement for missing teeth, and can also act as a support for individual crowns, multi-tooth bridges and dentures. It is possible to have several implants placed at the same time – and with the Smile in a Day procedure at Smile 4 U, we can even provide you with a full set of new teeth using only four implants.
An implant is a small, screw-like ‘post’ which acts as an anchor for a prosthetic tooth, mimicking the natural tooth root. Made of very strong, biocompatible material – usually titanium – the post is carefully implanted into the jaw bone to fuse with your natural bone, creating an anchor. Once fused, an ‘abutment’ will be placed on or built into the dental implant (post) to connect the replacement tooth to the implant. Once the abutment is in place, a perfectly crafted replacement tooth or ‘crown’ – usually made of ceramic materials – is secured on top. Depending on what you require, the replacement can be a crown, a bridge or even a full arch.
With over 30 years of research, testing and improvements in materials and techniques, implants are a safe treatment and will last as long as any other natural tooth, if cared for properly with a good oral hygiene routine. If the bone they are fitted to is strong and healthy, you can expect them to last for many years.
Implant + Crown: A crown is a single tooth replacement fitted on top of the abutment.
Implant + Bridge: Dental implants can be used to support a bridge. This usually requires two implants with a bridge running between the two and multiple replacement teeth attached to it.
Implant + Full Arch: As an alternative to a traditional denture, a full upper or lower ‘arch’ of teeth can be replaced. The number of implants necessary to support the arch will be determined by your dentist during initial assessment, but you won't require an implant for each missing tooth. A full arch implant treatment offers a far more stable and longer-lasting solution than dentures.
Implants + Dentures: Loose-fitting dentures can cause frustration, discomfort and even gum irritation. By choosing to secure your dentures with dental implants, chewing function is returned to normal, gum irritation is reduced and the wearer can regain lost confidence in biting and chewing. Because implants are permanent fixtures, there’s no need for daily attachment of removable dentures with sticky adhesives.
Dental implants instantly improve your appearance by giving you back your smile. They look and feel just like natural teeth and are permanently fixed into your jawbone, replacing the root of the missing tooth. Implants can also help combat the signs of ageing, as your natural jawline is preserved and bone ‘shrinkage’ that comes with age is reduced.
With the highest long-term success rate of any tooth replacement treatment – over 95% – implants are the number one treatment option for replacing missing teeth.
